I’ve been playing FarmVille. Me and 56 million other people. The company that creates and operates this and other facebook and Internet games has made $150 million off of FarmVille, and still counting. FarmVille is a world within a world, one that differs in scale and manageability from the larger, more substantial one that we usually occupy. No small part of its appeal lies in its digital satisfaction of our love of miniaturization, a fascination that also explains the popularity of things like model railroads and elaborate doll houses. Such small worlds that we can easily manipulate appeal to the inner technocrat that we all harbor.

William E. Elston is a professional artist and teacher living in the Pacific Northwest. He has exhibited for over 40 years, and has works in numerous public and private collections, both in the region and internationally. He is best known for urban and rural landscape images. He is also a founding member of the Northwest Figurative Artists' Alliance.

Aside from teaching painting, Mr. Elston also teaches karate, and has yondan rank in the World Seido Karate Organization.
